GOLD at 18U Provincials for MVC 17U
Playing up a year at the 18U Provincials, MVC 17U took home the gold medal in Division 1 Tier 3 for a 17th overall finish. Going in ranked 31st, MVC increased their ranking by 14 positions (the most of any team in D1).
On Day 1 of round robin play, MVC was defeated by the Predators Purple 18U 16-25, 19-25, and DRVC 17U 11-25, 28-26, but bounced back to defeat the Thundercats in 3 sets 25-23, 22-25, 15-5 to finish 3rd place in their pool. Day 2 of the competition had MVC playing their best defence of the season, earning over 21 digs per set (up from their average of 17) to go 3-0 on the day, defeating SVC Stingings 25-17, 25-18, MVC 18U 22-25, 25-16, 15-7. and Scorpions 18U 25-15, 12-25, 15-12. Due to their 1st place finish in their pool on Day 2, MVC 17U moved up a tier for the playoff rounds on Sunday.
The quarter final match brought Reach Synergy 17U (Top 8 at 17U), which MVC defeated 25-19, 25-22 in large part due to a controlled offence in combination with continued outstanding defence carried over from Day 2. In the semi-finals MVC went up against South County 18U with some very strong competition. The first set loss of 14-25 appeared one sided; however, once MVC focused on their own play and limited their errors, they won the 2nd set 25-22 and the 3rd 15-8 to go to the gold medal game, and a rematch with Predators Purple, who defeated MVC 17U on Day 1.
The gold medal match was close, and a deep bench with both physical and mental stamina won on the day with MVC claiming the gold 18-25, 25-21, 15-13. Congratulations to the girls for an outstanding tournament, a 7-2 record, and a gold medal playing one year up. The team now looks forward to competing in the East Coast Championships in Pittsburgh at the end of May.
